Anders als die kalte und graue Berlinale liegt die Diagonale wettermäßig günstiger. Wenn man Glück hat ist es da unten im Süden Österreichs Ende März meistens frühlingshaft warm, oft auch wärmer als in Wien. Man kann den Kaffee in der Sonne trinken und zum ersten Mal länger als 5 Minuten eine schicke Sonnenbrille tragen.

While it is always cold and gray at the Berlinale, the weather at the Diagonale is much better. If you are lucky it really feels like springtime in the end of March in southern Austria, and often it is warmer than in Vienna. You can drink your coffee sitting in the sun and for the first time you can wear your new chic sunglasses for more than five minutes.

Auf der Diagonale gibt es seit Jahren einen Fixpunkt: Am Abend werden Kalashnikovs getrunken. Als Herr Manfred noch Barkeeper im Hotel Erzherzog Johann war, da traf sich die ganze Filmbranche immer dort, oft bis in die frühen Morgenstunden. Und getrunken wurden dabei eine Menge Kalashnikovs. Herr Manfred ging vor einigen Jahren in Pension, und die Trauer darob war groß. Aber das Team der Diagonale verschafft Herrn Manfred jetzt jedes Jahr ein Comeback und lädt ihn ein in der Bar vom Kunsthaus seinen berühmten Drink zu mixen. Er besteht aus drei Schichten: Creme de Cacao, frisch gepresster Zitronensaft, Wodka. Man trinkt das ganze am besten Ex, mischt es im Mund – und genießt den frischen Geschmack. Hier könnt ihr Herrn Manfred bei der Arbeit zusehen.

At the Diagonale Film Festival there is always one highlight: Everyone is drinking Kalashnikovs in the evening. When Herr Manfred had still been the barkeeper at the Erzherzog Johann Hotel, the whole Austrian filmindustry would gather in the small hotel bar in the evenings during the festival, be up until the wee hours of the morning, and drink lots of Kalashnikovs. But Herr Manfred retired a few years ago, and everyone was grieving over that fact. But the Diagonale Festival team helps him staging a comeback every year for two nights and invites Herr Manfred to mix his famous drink at the Kunsthaus bar. A Kalashnikov contains of three layers: Creme de Cacao, freshly squeezed lemon juice and vodka. To have the best of it you should down it all at once, mix it in your mouth and enjoy the fresh taste. Ich packe die Koffer für die Diagonale in Graz, wo ich morgen früh hinfahre. Wie immer kommt mein Reisehase mit. Ich habe ihn vor einigen Jahren im Muji Store in Berlin kennen gelernt und mir war sofort klar dass wir die besten Freunde werden. Allerdings ist er momentan ein wenig ungehalten weil ich ihm noch immer keinen richtigen Namen gegeben habe. Vielleicht fällt euch ja einer ein bis ich zurück bin? (Notiz: Ich bin bis Sonntag Abend in Graz, bis dahin könnten die Updates hier unregelmäßig bis gar nicht vonstatten gehen.)

I am packing my bags for the Diagonale Film Festival in Graz, where I will go tomorrow morning. As always my travel rabbit will come with me. I met him a few years ago in the Muji store in Berlin, and I immediately knew we would be Best Friends Forever. But at the moment he is a bit uneasy because I still did not give him a proper name. Maybe you can find one until I come back? (Note: I will be in Graz until Sunday evening, so there might be no updates until then.)

Manchmal fühle ich mich sehr verwirrt.

Sometimes I am feeling very confused.

Als Tante H. vor einiger Zeit sehr viel abgenommen hatte, ernsthaft und aus gesundheitsgründen, meinte ich zu ihr – und es kam aus tiefstem Herzen – dass sie wirklich auf sich stolz sein könne. Unerwarteterweise fand sie das gar nicht gut. „Auf was soll ich stolz sein? Dass ich meinen Körper jahrelang ruiniert habe?“ meinte sie, und da fiel mir auf, dass sie wohl „Stolz“ im Sinn von „Hochmut“ gemeint hatte, eine Todsünde im übrigen, und ich den Zeitpunkt des Gewichtsverlustes und sie die Zeit davor. Für mich bedeutet Stolz sein etwas anderes. Dass ich etwas geschafft habe was ich mir vorgenommen hatte, dass ich dafür von mir selbst und anderen Anerkennung bekomme und dass mich das alles glücklich macht. Und im Moment bin ich gerade sehr stolz auf mich.

When my aunt H. lost a lot of weight some time ago – she took it very seriously and did it for her health – I said to her (and I really really meant it): „You can be so proud of yourself.“ Against my expectations she was not pleased at all with this. „What should I be proud of? That I ruined my health all those years before?“, and it occurred to me that „being proud of something“ was connected to her to „pride“ as in „arrogance“, a deadly sin, and that I had been talking about the time after her weight loss and she had been talking about the time before. For me being proud means something different. That I accomplished something I resolved to do, that I am recognized for it by myself and others and that it makes me happy. And at the moment I am very proud of myself.

Ich komme gerade von dem Lesungs- und Filmscreeningereignis zurück, das ich organisiert habe und schwebe in einer Glücksblase. Ein Raum, der bis zum letzten Platz voller wunderbarer Menschen war, eine Geschichte die berührt hat, ein Film der naheging. Freunde die ich lange nicht gesehen habe, gute Gespräche, herausragende Rückmeldungen, und Wein. Ich bin jetzt gerade sehr, sehr glücklich.

I have just come back from the reading and filmscreening I organized and I am floating in a bubble of happiness. A room full of wonderful people, a touching story, a moving shortfilm. Friends I did not see for a very long time, great conversations, terrific feedback, and wine. Right now I am very, very happy.

Ich bereite gerade die Veranstaltung vor und wundere mich dass das alles wirklich passiert. Es passiert weil ich es beschlossen habe und einfach tue. Das ist eine wirklich erstaunliche Angeleegenheit, und ich kann jedem nur raten: Machs einfach.

I am preparing the event and I am wondering if this is really happening to me. But it happens because I decided to do it. Actually, it is very simple. But still it is an astonishing development, and I keep telling every single one of you: Just do it!

Heute ist mir etwas Seltsames passiert. Ich gehe auf das Postamt in Büronähe um eine Schuhlieferung abzuholen. Die Postbeamtin sucht un sucht, und als sie fündig wird kommt sie mit einem riesigen blauen Sack daher. Der Sack ist fast so groß wie ich (ungelogen, meine Bürokollegin hat ein Foto gemacht), und ganz unten im Sack befinden sich die zwei kleinen Schuhkartons. Als ich den blauen Sack genauer ansehen erkenne ich dass es ein umgedrehter Postsack der schwedischen Post ist, samt Logo mit Krone. Ich weiß auch nicht was das alles bedeuten soll.

Today something weird happened. I went to the post office near my office to fetch a shoe delivery. The post office clerk was searching a long time for the delivery, and when she finally found it she came back to me with a huge blue bag. The bag had almost my size (I kid you not, my colleague made a picture in our office), and deep down inside the huge bag there were my two small shoe boxes. As I looked closer at the bag I saw that it was a bag from the Swedish post, turned inside out. It even had the logo with the crown on it. I have no idea what that all means.

Sollte ich mir jemals Tattoos stechen lassen – wofür ich viel zu feige bin – würde das erste wohl dieses sein. Damit ich nicht vergesse zu atmen.

If I should ever get myself tattoos – which I am much too afraid of – it would be this. Just in case I forgot to breathe.
