Heute habe ich MELANCHOLIA im Kino gesehen und war schwer beeindruckt.

Today I have been at the movies and saw MELANCHOLIA, and I was very impressed.

Da mache ich einmal eine kleine Viennale-Pause, und dann gewinne ich Karten für die Vorpremiere von Werner Herzogs „Cave of forgotten dreams“ und lande doch wieder im Kino. Die Dokumentation über die Höhlenmalereien in der Chauvet-Höhle ist faszinierend. Diese 30.000 Jahre alten Zeichnungen, das ist wirklich atemberaubend. Und HöhlenforscherIn klingt nach einem interessanten Beruf. Letztlich ist die Höhle ja auch nur eine Metapher für die eigene Psyche, und wahrscheinlich ist jeder Zeit seines Lebens sein eigener Höhlenforscher. Was verbirgt sich hinter dem Eingang zu eurer Höhle?

So I am taking a short break from the Viennale film festival, and then I win tickets for a preview of Werner Herzog’s „Cave of forgotten dreams“ and end up in the cinema anyway. Herzog’s documentary about the rock art in the Chauvet-cave in France is utterly fascinating. These 30.000 year old drawings are breathtaking. And being a speleologist seems to be a rather interesting job. But in the end a cave is a metaphor for our own mind, and I think everyone is a speleologist of his own psyche for all his life. So what lies behind the entrance of your cave?

Die Filme bei der Viennale saugen mich auf. Wenn ich das Kino verlasse und durch die herbstliche Stadt gehe denke ich, ich bin in einem Film. Wenn ich arbeite geht es auch um Filme. Das alles wird sich bis Anfang November kaum ändern. Und ich liebe es. (Und außerdem glaube ich dass diese Sache mit dem hintergrundbeleuchteten Transparentpapier ausbaufähig ist. Wenn ich mehr Zeit habe wird damit experimentiert, versprochen.)

I am being absorbed by the movies at Viennale film festival. When I leave the cinema and walk through the cold and grey city I think I am part of a movie. My work is all about movies. And that will not change until the festival is over in the beginning of November. But I am loving it. (And I think that this thing I am currently trying with background light and translucent paper is something I will keep. When I have more time on my hands I will definitely experiment with this.)

Zur Zeit ist das VIENNALE Filmfestival in der Stadt, und ich gehe täglich mindestens einmal ins Kino. Und obwohl es mein Beruf ist und es eigentlich Routine sein müsste staune ich immer wieder was so ein paar bewegte Lichtpunkte auf einer Leinwand in mir an Emotionen auslösen können.

The VIENNALE filmfestival has started a few days ago and I am seeing at least one movie a day. And although it is my job and it should be everyday routine for me I am still amazed how a few moving illuminated spots on a screen can evoke so many emotions.

Meine Cousine aus Salzburg ist zu Besuch bei mir in Wien. Wir waren zuerst Einkaufen und haben dann einen wirklich netten Abend im Museumsquartier verbracht. Aber jetzt – psst!, sie schläft schon nebenan in meinem Wohnzimmer.

My cousin from Salzburg arrived in Vienna today. First we went shopping and then we spent a very nice evening at the Museumsquartier. But shhhh! – she is already asleep in my living room.

Er konnte sich nicht entscheiden was peinlicher war: Dass er sich ergeben musste oder dass er sein Unterhemd vor 1000 Pinguinen schwenkte.

He could not decide what was more embarrassing – having to surrender or waving his undershirt in front of one thousand penguins.

Ich hatte ganz vergessen dass ich ja einmal ein Alphabet begonnen hatte. Und zwar das von Celeste und ihrer Welt. Deswegen gibt es heute den Buchstaben „G“: Hinter dem Dorf, auf einer Waldlichtung gibt es einen riesengroßen Graben. Niemand weiß wozu er dient, aber man geht besser nicht zu nah dran, sonst wird man in ein hässliches Tier verwandelt. So besagt es zumindest die Legende, ausprobiert hat das noch niemand. Wenn man genau hinsieht erkennt man kleine Pfade und Leitern im Graben, so als würden winzige Wesen in dem Graben wohnen. Aber genau weiß das kein Mensch.

I totally forgot that I once started drawing an alphabet of Celeste and her world. This is why there is the letter „G“ today, as in „Graben“ (=ditch): Behind the village, on a clearing in the forest, there is a huge ditch. No one knows where it came from and what its function might be. But you better stay away from it, otherwise you might be transformed into a very ugly beast. At least this is what the legend says – nobody dared to try it yet. If you look very close you can see tiny paths and little ladders as if very small creatures would live in the ditch. But no one knows for sure.
